It is a group of individuals that are the main focus as they make their journey to the frozen south.

They set up homes and laboratories using spare parts cannibalised from the ships and planes on which they travelled. I really enjoyed the initial alien invasion and the desperate attempts of everyone across the globe to reach Antarctica before the mysterious deadline. The book moves through several POVs which was interesting - but a little hard to keep track of the timeline with each. The story looks at the different communities that are set up on Antarctica and how they experiment with genetic engineering to try and create humans that can comfortably exist in the freezing conditions on Antarctica.Having read other novels from the author I thought I’d try this one, despite the sci-fi genre not being my typical read. This section was ok, but it again quickly jumped ahead to scientists in the capital city engineering advanced barely human creatures (imagine The Rock in the Mummy 2 and you aren't far off.

Dystopia is one of my favourite genres and having been a huge fan of Child 44 etc I was intrigued whether Tom Rob Smith could make the leap. In Cold People, aliens swoop down to the earth and warn the entire population of Earth to make their way to Antarctica within 30 days or perish. Though he isn't present in every scene, he conveys each piece of the story leading up to the murder as if he were an omniscient narrator, capable of accessing every character's interior perspective. Ordinary-born people have to eke out an existence in the harshest environment on the planet, surviving minus-40-degree weather, six months of darkness a year, and scant resources. While people try to build a life they are starting to worry about what will happen to the human race in the future.

I should have guessed that this might be a series just from the author's bio: he is famous for them! In the end though, where Cold People falls down is in its failure to deliver an engaging, propulsive narrative to drive its ideas. We follow a multi-perspective story as humanity comes into question and how people will either come together to survive…or possibly perish. It explores the ingenuity and tenacity of human nature, the sheer WILL to ensure that the species survives against all odds. It is one of those books that I believe will reveal more and more ideas for consideration on repeated examination. Although this isn’t the type of storyline I usually go for, I loved Child 44 and The Farm so requested it from Netgalley because of the author.
