This could be done by using pictures, missing words in sentences, fill in the missing sounds, make words with the sound using letters displayed. Little Wandle is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, which provides high quality planning and resources for the teaching staff. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. If you find the book band on this for a few recent books your DC has brought home and then look at book band per year group expectations it'll give you that broad idea of how she is doing for her age.

I’d agree with Biff, Chip and Kipper era books just being less words, some of the words in even the easiest bands of these books aren’t easy at all! Apply - The children will have a go at reading or writing sentences of words that involve the new sound/word they have just learned. The books will be matched perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and will support all the Letters and Sounds phases. The school I teach at swapped to little wandle at the start of the year and we've had to reorganise, give away and purchase new books. Calendar arrived safely in plastic-free packaging - which I've not seen before with a calendar, so kudos for that.

by SLT and scrutinised through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised assessment tracker, to narrow attainment gaps between different groups of children and so that any additional support for teachers can be put into place. Children on track should be secure with phase 4 (be able to read single letter sounds and phase 3 digraphs and trigraphs, words with constant blends ie frog, splash or brain as well as words with 3-4 syllables).

Mike Byrne grew up near Liverpool before moving to Wales to study Illustration at Glyndwr University. My DS is currently reading at the hardest end of Phase 2 (summer born reception) which probably equates to the easier end of red books using the list someone linked earlier. At Broomfield, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. Where this is the case, we will support these children by using the Little Wandle Rapid Catch Up Scheme. The progress in the phases seems much more regimented, so I think we’ll be “stuck” on stage 4 for quite a while…. Sorry to jump on this thread months later but my DS is using this reading programme also and has been reading the phase 5 books since yr 1.

I too don’t really like the uncertainty of this being a new scheme not directly comparable with the old book bands as it’s harder to choose what books to read together at home of a similar level. Our Phonics Book Bag Readers series includes a wide selection of diverse and inclusive stories, accompanied by bright and contemporary illustrations that will engage and inspire young readers. Pupils are able to engage in discussions about plots and characters, recommend a book to a peer and evaluate an author's use of language and the impact this has on the reader. Introduction and engagement - The teacher will explain to the children what they will be learning today and get them enthusiastic and motivated for the session. We value reading for pleasure highly and work hard as a school to grow our Reading for Pleasure pedagogy.Phonics is delivered every day in Reception so that children have plenty of opportunities to revisit, practice and apply their phonic knowledge. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects. Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning. We encourage reading for pleasure through children having a choice of challenging and enriching texts as well as building in time for children to read independently and as part of a whole class.
