Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned. I think this book has a lot of layers that don't come through at first, but that kill you more and more the deeper you look.

Within the few minutes it takes the elevator to descend, William will have to decide whether he intends to carry out the revenge he originally sought out for. To my mess of a brain, if poetry doesn't rhyme or have a prominent rhythm or pattern, it just seems that the enter key was pressed in random places.I’ve always loved stories written in verse, so when I heard about this own-voice tale of the struggles that toxic masculinity and systemic racism place upon young black men, I was immediately interested. I think the reason I didn't completely love this has a lot to do with the fact that it was written in verse. Will explores this dilemma during a long elevator ride down, in which he is visited by the ghosts of people who have been impactful in his life. A heartrending and convincing blank verse narrative, with atmospheric mixed-media images by Chris Priestley, about a 15-year-old boy whose brother is shot, "lying there like a piece/of furniture left outside", and who wrestles with the idea of revenge.

His vision of art and writing is to see empathy extended, more and more empathy extended, right across all barriers and boundaries. Will knows that if someone does not vindicate their loved one's death, they are considered disloyal, and betray the memory of their loved one. The main character, Will, lives in a world where crying and snitching are forbidden, and seeking revenge is expected.

Along the way, he is visited by the ghosts of influential people from his life that seek to guide his decision. Then, Will's father, Mikey, enters and holds a gun to Will's head to show him what it feels like to be a victim. Long Way Down has won numerous awards, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature, a Walter Dean Meyers Award, a Newberry Award Honor, and a Coretta Scott King Award Honor. I don’t tolerate self-absorbed people who go out of their way commenting on my review because they think theirs is the only right opinion.
