Description

The film is decidedly low budget and simply made, but benefits from a good script and a stellar cast. Whether from ill judged performances or miscasting is uncertain, but here he is perfectly cast as Gabriel Caine, a slick, fast talking hustler. From the opening scenes we get to witness how the fast talking sleek Gabriel runs hustles within the prison and from there the film entertains at every turn. Luckily the movie never fully explores this as a romantic sub plot and we’re left with just slightly creepy flirting that doesn’t blossom into anything else thankfully!

Roy Palmer was leaning against the ropes between each round in the first few fights; fighters don't do that, since it makes the arm muscles tense and sore. Palmer looks done for, but he gets new motivation after seeing Diggs, who is sitting courtside, move his hand slightly (which he interprets as a show of support). Two small edge tears on the bottom edge, crease from the left edge center up to the top edge, Otherwise Very Good!Playing to Gillon`s avaricious nature, and with the aid of partner Fitz, Caine sets up a wager with Gillon, that a washed-up has-been fighter can knock out ten straight opponents in the space of 24 hours. But Roy comes out swinging, pulverizing one contender after another, leading to a final exciting bout that may decide the ownership of the town itself! It's far from a sure thing, though, since Gabe's fighter is "Honey" Roy Palmer (Gossett), a cranky, over-the-hill 48-year-old who has just come out of retirement. Caine finds himself a contender (Louis Gossett Jnr) and bets the crooked boss of Diggstown that his man can beat ten fighters in 24 hours. However, the good news is that now everyone can enjoy what is essentially a boys film, but truly one of the great underrated films of all time.

Frank Mangrum officially loses to disqualification after kicking Palmer in the groin, then hitting the referee then gets knocked out by Palmer. Buck Holland (played by former heavyweight boxing contender Rocky Pepeli), who puts up a good fight. Gabe, recognising a golden opportunity, bets the town`s powerful boss (Bruce Dern) that his fighter will defeat ten opponents in 24 hours. James Woods plays the consumate conman who sets up a boxing sting involving Louis Gosset Jr as the boxer, and Oliver Platt as their accomplice.

Upon hearing a remark that Diggs once knocked out five fighters in one day, Fitz “drunkenly” says he knows of a fighter who could knock out any 10 in one day: Honey Roy Palmer. Doing time has proved to be a valuable learning experience where he first heard of Diggstown, the rural capital of illegal cash fighting, which, as a gambling venture, is a con artist’s dream. Set in the fictional Diggstown, Gabriel Caine (James Woods) a recently released ex-con sets his sights of taking down the unspoken ruler of a small town who is responsible for his friend losing his life. Der frisch aus dem Knast gekommene Kunstfälscher Gabriel Caine (James Woods) wettet mit dem reichsten Mann von Diggstown John Gillon (Bruce Dern), dass der 48 jährige Boxer Roy Palmer (Louis Gosett Jr.

However, the story does take a sinister turn that is a little unexpected given the initially frivolous nature of the script. Ex-con Gabriel Caine and partner Fitz cook up a plan to take rich Diggstown resident John Gillon for all he’s worth. There are a few plot holes that could do with patching and the fight sequences come straight from the Rocky School of boxing. This knocks the spots off 99% of films coming out at the moment and the fact that it has taken 12 years to come out on DVD is a disgrace! He truly embodies a nasty greedy man who feeds off power and corruption and will stop at nothing to win. In the romantic comedy 'Bull Durham' (1988), seasoned baseball player (Kevin Costner) is assigned to coach a hot-shot newcomer (Tim Robbins). Gossett, Dern, and Cobb all deliver fine supporting turns, as do Oliver Platt, Orestes Matacena, and Heather Graham.
