The beloved author gets intimate in her new book--a rich compilation of true stories and photos from [her] life and career. I adore Cisneros' voice, her independence, her passion for writing and reading, and her desire to have a home of her own. When she was reading in Portland, Sandra Cisneros talked about losing track of what she had written BC (before computers).

With this collection—spanning three decades, and including never-before-published work—Cisneros has come home at last. From the Chicago neighborhoods where she grew up and set her groundbreaking The House on Mango Street to her abode in Mexico in a region where “my ancestors lived for centuries,” the places Sandra Cisneros has lived have provided inspiration for her now-classic works of fiction and poetry.

I kind of knew what she meant, because my father liked television, while my mother liked reading books about political science and thinkers.Very prevalent were the themes of a house/home, not only the importance of a home as a place where you live which contains memories, but also as your own place in which to organize and decorate as you wish, based on your wants, needs, etc. The water, warm as a body, lapped at my earlobes, and the trees set a dappled light waving the sunlight gently over me as if giving me a cleansing. Her new collection stitches together three decades of her unique life into a kind of rolling memoir.

Much of the book is focused on the hardships of writing, [but] it is as much an ode to pursuing one's passion despite all odds as it is a meditation on family, friends, and finding a home. I thought that it was quite good how she didn’t explain things, but also kept it accessible enough that an ignorant person wouldn’t get too frustrated with the onslaught of new information. The main theme in this amazing collection of various vignettes is t he nostalgia for a home, for a belonging, for a language of your parents that is no longer there when the loved ones are gone.He is a former column editor for English Journal (National Council of Teachers of English), current series editor for Critical Literacy Teaching Series: Challenging Authors and Genres (Brill), and author of Teaching Writing as Journey, Not Destination: Essays Exploring What ‘Teaching Writing’ Means (IAP, 2019) and How to End the Reading War and Serve the Literacy Needs of All Students: A Primer for Parents, Policy Makers, and People Who Care (IAP, in press). Most recently, she received the Ford Foundation’s Art of Change Fellowship, was recognized among The Frederick Douglass 200, and was awarded the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.

Wherever she settles, even when she settles, she is Sandra Cisneros, a wandering spirit and creator of stories. I met Sandra Cisneros on the page in college, like many young people do, having been assigned The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories. I could relate to this and I often think of how, due to my introvertism, I desired lots of time alone. Her voice is strong over three decades; this collection of non-fiction details her thoughts and movements well. As in her fiction and poetry, Cisneros blends family stories from Chicago and Mexico with lively storytelling, rich details, and good humor. The reflections on “otherness” are so beautifully nuanced and many readers surely would relate to the emotions and feelings expressed in this memoir.
